101.7 Beach Lounge. June 19, 2009.
I found out about this show a few days before it was happening. A local radio station, 101.7the beach, usually has really great artists (past artists: Matt Nathanson, Augustana, Sara Bareilles, Mandy Moore, Graham Colton etc...) come to Monterey and play small, intimate shows they call The Beach Lounge.
This one I specially was interested in, since I fell in love with the band Parachute a few months ago. They recently released their first album, and it had been in heavy rotation in my car, on my ipod; basically it was the only thing I had listened to for weeks on end.
I, unfortuantely, did not win tickets to the event. I knew where it was being held, and seeing as it was only a half hour drive away (this one was in Aptos; a few miles south of Santa Cruz), I decided to just go and see what happened. Luckily, the station had a "stand-by" line to fill in spots for the 50 winners if someone didn't show up. (Security actually was really nice to me and pulled me aside and let me in even though I didn't have a spot even before the stand-bys got in. Woot!)
Brooke White, Parachute, and Sugar Ray played.
After Parachute's set, I talked to the band for a bit, and they stole my heart. Not only are they amazing live, (they rocked it even during an acoustic set) they are some of the sweetest boys I've met. They let me gush about their CD, and about how I was almost too intimidated to talk to them. "Why, Joslyn? We're not Sugar Ray!" (Ha.) They are adorable. Definitely on my recommendation "to watch" list for anyone reading this. Check them out at weareparachute.com!
